The North Wind & the Sun- Jia

 

 

You may have heard the saying, "The pen is mightier than the sward."

This next story gives us a good lesson about those words.

 

The North Wind and the Sun were both sitting on top of a mountain.

The North Wind boasted to the Sun that he was much stronger.

But the Sun said he was stronger. He said he would prove it.

So they decided to have contest. 

 

The Sun thought and thought, but could not think of how to prove his power.

At that moment, a traveler was walking near the mountain.

The traveler was a strong man wearing a large black cloak.

The sun saw traveler and an idea came to mind.

 

The challenge was to see who could get the man to take his cloak off first.

Whoever succeeded would be recognized as the stronger one.

The North Wind agreed to the Sun's challenge.

 

The North Wind decided to go first.

He took a deep breath. Then, He blew as hard as he could.

The traveler took a step backwards.

The North Wind kept blowing chilly winds.

The traveler pulled his cloak more tightly around him.

 

It was the Sun's turn. The Sun shined as bright and as hot as he could.

The temperature rose. The traveler got hotter and hotter.

He began sweating and wiping his face.

Finally, the traveler got too hot. He took off his cloak.

The Sun smiled. The North Wind glared angrily.

 

The North Wind was angry. He did not understand how the Sun won.

The Sun explained to him that

sometimes strength is not the most important thing.

Sometimes you can get people to do

what you want by other ways than force.

The North Wind agreed that the Sun was right.

 

 

이런 말을 들어봤을 겁니다. '펜은 칼보다 강하다."

다음 이야기는 우리에게 이 말과 관련해 교훈을 줍니다.

 

북쪽바람과 태양 둘이서 산꼭대기에 앉아 있었습니다.

북쪽 바람은 태양에게 큰소리 치길 자기가 더 힘이 세다고 말했죠.

하지만 태양은 자기가 더 힘이 세다고 말했죠.

그걸 증명할 수 있다고요. 그래서 둘은 겨뤄보기로 했습니다.

 

태양은 생각하고 생각했지만 어떻게 자기의 힘을 보여줄지 떠올릴 수 없었습니다.

바로 그때 한 여행자가 산 근처를 걷고 있었습니다.

여행자는 커다란 검은색 외투를 입은 건장한 남자였습니다.

태양이 그 여행자를 보자 한 가지 생각이 떠올랐습니다.

 

누가 먼저 그 남자의 외투를 벗게 만들지를 시합하기로 했습니다.

누구든 성공하는 쪽이 힘이 센 걸로 인정받는 거죠.

북쪽 바람은 태양의 도전에 찬성했습니다.

 

북쪽 바람이 먼저 하기로 했습니다. 그는 숨을 길게 들이마셨습니다.

그리곤 최대한 세게 입김을 불었습니다. 여행자는 한 걸음 물러섰습니다.

북쪽 바람은 계속해서 차가운 바람을 날렸습니다.

여행자는 기의 코트를 몸 주위로 더 바짝 끌어당겼습니다.

 

이번엔 태양의 차례였습니다.

태양은 할 수 있는 한 밝고 뜨겁게 햇살을 비추었습니다.

온도가 올라갔죠. 여행자는 점점 더위를 느꼈습니다.

그는 땀을 흘리고 얼굴을 닦기 시작했습니다.

드디어 여행자는 너무 덥다고 느꼈죠. 그는 외투를 벗었습니다.

태양이 미소지었습니다. 북쪽 바람은 화가 나서 노려보았죠.

 

북쪽 바람은 화가 났습니다.

태양이 어떻게 이겼는지 이해할 수가 없었죠.

태양은 복쪽 바람에게 때로는 강함이 가장 중요한 게 아닐 때도 있다고 설명해 주었습니다.

때론 힘이 아닌 다른 방식으로 사람들을 자기가 바라는 대로 움직이게 할 수 있다고요.

북쪽 바람은 태양의 말이 옳다는 걸 인정했습니다.
