I hope everyday is like Seollal.- Sharon
Just like other countries,
we have many important holidays.
Among those, the two most important traditional holidays are,
Chu-sok which is Korean Thanksgiving Day
and Seollal which is Korean New Year’s Day.
And now I’m going to talk about Seollal.
Seollal is the first day of the lunar calendar.
This holiday is typically family-oriented
and usually lasts three days.
The three-day holiday is used by
many to return to their home towns to visit their parents
and other relatives where they perform
the ancestral ritual known as charye.
Some koreans dress up in colorful hanbok.
Also, Tteokguk, a soul with rice cake is commonly served.
I like to meet many relatives
whom I haven’t seen for a long time.
We play yutnori which is
a korean traditional family board game together and talk all night.
The most fun part in Seollal is Sebae.
It is a deep traditional bow which we perform.
We youngsters wish parents
and elders a happy New Year
and parents reward us with New Year’s money.
They also offer words of wisdom.
I usually wear a beautiful hanbok
and perform a bow to all my relatives.
And the money I get in New Year’s Day,
goes to my bank account for later use.
Seollal is the perfect time for meeting my cousins and relatives,
and eating lots of delicious food.
I really hope everyday is like Seollal.
