Try to understand others -William & Kate

 

 

A   Hello Kate. How are you today?

B   I am good, William. How about you?    

A   I am fine, but I am a bit concerned about the new student. 

B   Oh, the new student in Yale class. Why are you worried about her?

A   I think she doesn't get along with her classmates.

    She doesn't appear to have any friends. 

B   Well, she is a bit diffrent. I heard that her mother is from Russia

     and her father is Korean. I heard they got married in Russia

     and moved to Seoul recently. 

A   I heard that too. Have you spoken to her? 

B   I have not spoken to her.

     And I don't know anyone else who has talked to her.

     I did see her father pick her up after school one day.

     I heard him speak Korean to her and she spoke back to hime in Korean. 

A   She also seems to be doind well in school,

     so her Korean must be pretty good then.

     She probably speaks Russian and Korean.

     I want to talk to her, But she seems so cold.  

B   Yes, she looks nery different too. Her hair is different.

     She dresses differently.

A   I know. Why do you think she does that?

     Is that how people dress in Russia?  I don't think it looks very good.

B   I think she looks scary dressed in black all the time.

A   I tried to talk to her once outside after school. 

B   You did!  What did you say to her? 

A   I wanted to ask her about her mom and dad.

     I wanted to ask her about her life in Russia.

     But I just asked her how she was doing. Guess what she did?  

B   What?

A   She answered me in Russian. I had no idea waht she was saying.

     I asked her to speak in Korean. 

B   What did she do? Did she talk in Korean? 

A   She did, But she said that I must learn to speak Russian if I want to talk to her.

B   Russian! Why should we learn to speak Russian!

     She is a strange girl. She sounds so rude.

     If she can speak Korean, she should use it.

     

 

 

 

A   안녕, 케이트. 오늘 어때?

B   좋아 윌리엄, 넌 어때?

A   좋아, 그런데 새로운 학생 때문에 신경이 좀 쓰여.

B   아, Yale반에 새로운 학생, 왜 그애가 걱정돼?

A  그 애가 반 친구들이랑 잘 지내지 못하는 것같아.

    친구가 전혀 없어 보여.

B   음, 그 내가 좀 유별나지. 그 애 어머니는 러시아 출신이고, 아버지는 한국인이라고 들었어.

    러시아에서 결혼해 최근에 서울로 왔다고 하더군.

A   나도 들었어. 걔한테 말을 걸어본적 있니?

B   말을 걸어본 적은 없어. 그리고 걔랑 얘기를 해본 사람도 없는 것 같아.

A   언젠가 한번 그 애 아버지가 방과후에 그 애를 태우러 온 걸 봤어.

    그가 그 애에게 한국어로 얘기하고 그녀가 대답하는 것 들었어.

B   그 애가 학교 생활을 잘하는 걸로 봐서도 한국어를 곧잘 하는 것 같아.

    아마도 그 애는 러시아어와 한국어를 쓸거야.

    그 내에게 말을 걸고 싶은데 너무 차가워보여.

A  그래, 그 앤 보기에도 매우 달라. 머리색도 다르고 옷을 다르게 입지.

B  알아. 그 애가 왜 그런다고 생각해?

    러시아에선 그렇게들 입나? 내겐 별로 좋아보이지 않는데.

B   그 애가 늘 검은 옷을 입어서 무서워 보이는 것 같아.

A   학교 끝나고 밖에서 얘기해 보려고 한 적이 있어.

B   그랬단 말야? 그 애에게 뭐라고 했는데?

A   그 애에게 부모님 얘길 물어보고 싶었어.

     하지만 그냥 뭘하고 있느냐고 물어봤지. 그 애가 어떻게 했을 것 같아?

B    어쨌는데?

A    러시아에로 대답했어. 그 애가 뭐라고 하는지 전혀 못알아 들었지.

      한국어로 해달라고 부탁했어.

B    그 애가 어떻게 했어? 한국어를 했어?

A    그랬지. 그런데 자기하고 얘기하고 싶으면 러시아어를 배우라고 말하는 거야.

B    러시아어! 우리가 왜 러시아어를 배워야 해!

     이상한 애네. 무례한 것 같아. 한국어를 할 줄 알면 한국어를 써야지.
