Disneyland is known today as one of the world's most famous theme parks.

However, it had a faltering start when it first opened in 1955.

Construction continued right up until the televised broadcast of the grand opening,

whitch was co-hosted by various celebrities,

including futhure presidant Ronald Reagan.

Several rides were not yet ready,

and pedestrians' shoes got stuck on the melting asphalt on Main Street.

To make matters worse, the park was overcrowded,

with 15,000people visiting on its first day-

double the number expected.

Because of this, food at the refreshment stands and restaurants puivkly ran out.

But despite the less perfect start,

the theme park eventually turned out to be a huge sucess.

Two weeks after the grand opening,

a reporter revealed that more than 160,000 people

had visited Disneyland in its first week alone.

Though the park was initially predicted to draw 5 million visitors every year,

ot now average 12 millon visitors annually.

to date, it has welcomed more than 750 millon visitors in total.
